The Coachwhips - Bangers vs Fuckers

These has instantly become a new favorite of mine, the kind of band you hear for the first time and have no idea why you've never heard them before. Major shout out to my friend (and future band mate) Chris for showing them to me.
The Coachwhips were an exciting three piece garage punk rock and roll band from San Francisco, consisting of a guitarist/vocalist, a drummer and an organ player. "Exciting" may be something of an understatement. This music is loud, fast, simple, and sounds like its falling apart at the seams... and yet its so brilliantly tight and musically sound, your jaw is left somewhere on the floor as each song attacks you for a minute and a half each. The vocals are so distorted, you only manage to catch a word or two, a "yea" here and a "baby" there. Luckily, The Coachwwhips aren't trying to tell you anything; they just wanna get your ass shaking in all sorts of weird ways. Think the White Stripes (if the White Stripes actually COULDNT play there instruments) on speed, being molested by the organ player from The Attractions. As you can see, I haven't lost my touch for nasty metaphors.
I seriously love these guys. They aren't a band anymore, but the singer/guitarist has a fantastic new band called Thee Oh Sees. Catch them at Sled Island if you can!

Billie Holiday - "Storyville Cub"

Sometimes, it's really hard to believe that a soul like Billie Holiday left our midst so long ago. It was quite a few decades ago she died and yet to listen to this live record is to hear a voice so vibrant, so warm, so passionate. Outshining the mediocre recording quality is Billie's voice, an intrument all its own, giving it straight to you. Suddenly, heartbreak becomes comfort. Emotion is eroticized. Where else does one find a singer who is so willing to wear there heart on their sleeve? There was no sugar coating with Billie Holiday, though her wonderfully poetic words certainly helped.
Yes, there is some excellent jazz work in the backround, and yes, Billie's backing band deserves a ton of credit. But the fact is that you can't focus on anything but Holiday's voice. This world is lucky to have been graced by a singer with the raw emotion and honesty of Billie Holiday, for I know her music touched my soul. I hope it reach's yours as well!

The Black Keys - "The Big Come Up"

The Black Keys have been getting a decent amount of media coverage lately, what with so many of there songs being used in movies. Still, this is the album that noones heard, the first spark in the smoky barrel of blues that is The Black Keys.
Made up of a singer/guitarist and a drummer, The Black Keys may seem like a White Stripes rip but dont write them off in any way! While the Stripes stick to simple riffs that drive into your skull, the Keys treat each song like a jam session, trading drum fills and guitar licks like cards in a poker game. Its loud, hard edged, sexy, soulful blues with some of the COOLEST vocals I have ever heard! If The Black Keys don't make you want to seduce someone, then I don't know what will!

Pauline Paris - Le Grande Jeu

This is pure class. Like being caught at a poetry slam in a french coffee house, this album is at times surprising (all the lyrics are in french!) and at other times just what you might have needed or expected. Its smooth, elegant jazz with that slight weirdness to it that seems to be a recquirement for any music coming out of France. Ever since I saw "the Triplets of Belleville," I've been getting into this french jazz blues stuff so much, and I hope you do to! It's really neat and different, I highly recomend it.
